Absolutely not. Although Sports Massage originally evolved because of it’s many benefits for people who were participating in regular exercise, these days almost anyone can benefit.
In fact, I would argue that someone who works hard physically for their occupation needs sports massage even more than someone who would be considered “sporty”.
Think about a nurse of their feet all day, lifting and moving patients during a long shift. The bricklayer, builder, warehouse worker, all bending and twisting, lifting or mixing for 8 hours a day. How many people do you know who run, ride, lift or do any kind of formal exercise for even 2 hours a day? I’ve only known a handful in over 8 years as a Therapist.
In contrast, how many people do you know who work really hard all week and just don’t think about the benefits that Sports Massage could offer? Maybe you’re one of them?
Now, here’s the real kicker. Those with a sedentary lifestyle or job can benefit just as much too! How can this be when they’re not using their muscles like a highly tuned athlete? Simply put, it’s all about posture. Rounded shoulders, forward head carry, slumping lower back, shortening of the hip flexors and hamstrings and lazy glute muscles can leave people in all sorts of discomfort. Basically, anyone who is sat down for long periods of time, whether it’s at a desk, behind a wheel, a checkout worker, machinery operative or any other profession, they can all benefit.
Sports Massage can stretch, lengthen, loosen and generally counter the effects of hard physical work or a more sedentary life. The simple truth is that I see more people with issues related to their posture and lifestyle than for any other single reason.
If you see yourself in either description then why not get in touch or book a treatment to see for yourself how it might help.
